About the Campaign
I started running about 13 years ago as a way to stay in shape and before long was running half and full marathons. My brother Bobby was diagnosed 12 years ago (January) with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. He was told that he would need constant care within 3 years. He has broken all the rules, that rebel! He studies health and nutrition and has overhauled his diet. He eats cleaner than anyone I know and works hard to maintain strength and dexterity in his body. And most importantly he has, and continues to, inspire thousands with his positive outlook and determination. But that doesn’t change that due to the advanced nature of his MS he is now wheelchair bound and requires daily care. After his diagnosis my running took on new meaning. I didn’t want to waste the healthy legs and body I had. Bobby has been at both of my Ironman finish lines, and the Boston Marathon finish lines in his wheelchair and it’s because of his example that I am able to drive myself to achieve more.
I am always looking for more and unique ways that I can make my impact on this horible disease. Bobby and I have participated in many MS Walks and Bike MS. I’ve ran the Boston Marathon twice with the Marathon Strides Against MS Team and created a virtual race to Kiss MS Goodbye. But I needed something more. I felt this desire to bring more awareness, raise more funds and challenge myself more physically. By chance, two and a half years ago, I discovered MS Run the US and was immediately intrigued and excited. It was too late to become a relay runner that year so I became an ambassador in 2016. Then I got pregnant and had a baby so I was an ambassador again in 2017. Then it was finally my turn to be a member of the 2018 relay team and participate in MS Run the US. I had the opportunity to run segment four, 136 miles from Milford Utah to Nephi Utah and raise over $11,500! Through that experience I realized I can and will do more. So I am back and hope to continue to fight and bring more awareness to this disease until one day we can end MS for good!
I hope you will help me reach my goal of raising $10,000 this year, and follow my journey along the way.
Many thanks for your support — and don’t forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
The Ultra Relay
The Ultra Relay is an annual, 19 segment, relay run stretching 3,260 miles across America for the MS cause.
The Relay begins each year in April in Santa Monica, CA and finishes in August in New York, NY. Our relay runners are selected via our online application process to participate as an individual segment runner as a part of the 19 segment relay. To participate each runner commits to fundraising $10,000 over ten months and to running approximately 160 miles over 6 consecutive days during his or her assigned relay segment. Once selected each runner spends months training and fundraising with in depth help from the organization prior to the event’s start as they prepare to devote one week on the road while completing their segment’s miles. They are aided on the road by the organization’s road crew team. Each runner’s segment is logistically coordinated back-to-back as a part of the collective team effort to run across America. Donations raised support the organization’s mission to raise awareness of the MS disease, aid research, and to help those living with disability due to MS.
