About the Campaign
My story begins from the earliest moment I can remember. All but a few memories of my grandfather were of him unable to move in his bed. I do remember a few times he sat in a wheelchair, but that was about it. That was what I knew of MS while I was growing up. He passed away when I was 13 and I thought that would be the end of my experiences with MS. That was unfortunately not the case. When I was about 15 my mother was diagnosed with MS. This, of course, had a large impact on our family. We got involved in MS walks over the years and my mother even organized some of those.
Over the years my mother has continued to fight this horrible disease with good days and bad. She enjoys time with her 4 grandchildren and spoiling them to no end. In the summer of 2016 the athletic director at my school received an email from a group that was running a relay across the country and wanted to know if I and other would like to join him for a little run through my small town. As the track and cross country coach he sent it to me and I was immediately interested because of the cause they were fighting for. I, and some of my runners, met and ran a few miles with Curt Ehlinger and I was instantly interested in being part of this. I ran the 2017 relay segment that ran through my town and was able to raise more than $11,000. This year I will be running segment 14 in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana and I am hoping to raise more that $12,000.
I have been running for many years and am always looking for a way to help others through running and this was a great way to do that. So, with the encouragement and support of my family I have decided to do it again. My family and other people that I know that are living for this disease are the reason I run. Every dollar earned and every mile run is one step closer to finding a cure. I hope you can help us make this dream a reality.
The Ultra Relay
The Ultra Relay is an annual, 19 segment, relay run stretching 3,260 miles across America for the MS cause.
The Relay begins each year in April in Santa Monica, CA and finishes in August in New York, NY. Our relay runners are selected via our online application process to participate as an individual segment runner as a part of the 19 segment relay. To participate each runner commits to fundraising $10,000 over ten months and to running approximately 160 miles over 6 consecutive days during his or her assigned relay segment. Once selected each runner spends months training and fundraising with in depth help from the organization prior to the event’s start as they prepare to devote one week on the road while completing their segment’s miles. They are aided on the road by the organization’s road crew team. Each runner’s segment is logistically coordinated back-to-back as a part of the collective team effort to run across America. Donations raised support the organization’s mission to raise awareness of the MS disease, aid research, and to help those living with disability due to MS.
