About the Campaign
My Runner Story
I’m jumping with joy to be a part of the 2021 relay for MS Run the US! I get the pleasure of running segment 4 which involves me running 183 miles for 7 days. I will begin May 4th in Cedar City and end May 10th (Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers) in Nephi Utah.
What is MS?
And no, I’m not referring to Microsoft. Multiple Sclerosis, or commonly known as MS: Is a disease in which the immune system eats away at the protective covering of nerves. In other words, resulting nerve damage disrupts communication between the brain and the body. Multiple sclerosis causes many different symptoms, including vision loss, pain, fatigue, and impaired coordination. The symptoms, severity, and duration can vary from person to person. Some people may be symptom free most of their lives, while others can have severe chronic symptoms that never go away. Treatment can help, but this condition can\’t be cured.
I started running when I joined the military, because basically I had no choice, ha-ha. Running was an essential tool that played a huge role in our physical fitness as soldiers. To help maintain focus, stamina, and to endure any obstacle we came across throughout the day. At the time I found running to be quite challenging mentally and physically. Only after I was out of the military, I truly found running to be a gift. I live with PTSD and anxiety and running has become my sanity and coping mechanism. I\’ve done quite a few races from marathons, half marathons, Obstacle courses, relays, to fun runs. I\’ve always wanted to take my running to the next level and try an ultra, and now I will have the chance. I accept this challenge because not only am I running a great distance, but I\’m running to raise awareness, funds for research, and the fight against MS. Myself as well as 18 teammates will be running across America in order to help STOP MS. With each stride, and each mile, and each segment we will be one step closer in finding hope. In order to find a cure or better treatments there needs to be research, and in order for research we need funds to create more opportunities. I\’m extremely honored to have been chosen to be a part of MS Run the US, I strongly believe in this organization and what we are running for. I will run each day for those individuals whom I know and for the ones I don\’t know living with MS. You can help support me or my teammates through funding! For those of you near my route, please join me for a mile or 2 or 3 :), or just come out and say hi, or give high fives, or dance the robot with me, either way I’m extremely grateful. Feel free to follow my journey on Instagram. Thank you to all those who donate and to my teammates for the incredible fight against MS! Let’s find a cure together!
The MS Run the US – Relay is American’s first, only and longest annual relay run across America. We do this epic 3,260 mile run to STOP MS!
The Relay begins each year in April in Santa Monica, CA and finishes in August in New York, NY. Our Relay runners are hand- selected via our online application process to participate as one of 19 individuals on our relay team.
To participate, each runner commits to fundraising $10,000 and to running 160-miles over 6 days during his or her assigned relay segment. There are 19 segments total panning from California to New York. Each runner’s segment is coordinated back-to-back with their teammates in an effort to run 3,260-miles in 4.5 months. Crazy, huh?!
